**spoiler free! The Cruel Prince by Holly Black was on my reading list for SO long, and then when I picked it up for the first time—I put it down so quickly. This cycle continued a few more times, and then finally…I finished the first book. I was HOOKED, read below for a more in-depth review of all three books.
1) The Cruel Prince
2.5 stars out of 5.
I was so excited to read this book, but it was so slow! It was my first “fae” fantasy, and I really didn’t know what to expect. The prose and the characters were good, and the world building was *chef’s kiss*, but the lack of overall plot is what made it so difficult to read. It read more like an extremely long novella to set the stage for the second book. I was seriously debating whether or not I would continue this series, because I really hate it when authors spend the first book of a series just world building and end with a cliffhanger, but I’m glad I did.
Because the second book blew my mind.
2) The Wicked King
four stars out of 5.
I’m not normal about this book. SO much happened—it’s hard to believe it was only a little over 300 pages. It was fast paced and had PLOT. Every chapter made me gasp. I remember thinking “Jude has been through sooo much, and she still manages to be the hottest in all of Elfhame? Now that’s what I call a strong FMC.” The ending of this book practically had me withering on the floor, and I ordered book three so fast. This would probably be my favourite in the entire trilogy. (Plot twists and betrayals are EVERYTHING to me.)
3) The Queen of Nothing
five stars!!
The beginning of this book was a bit slower, but it had excellent writing and I adore the ending. I was holding back tears—I’ve never been more stressed while reading. Normally I love books with tragic and heartbreaking endings, but the ending of this series was just so sweet and words cannot describe how happy it made me.
All in all, if you’re debating picking up the books, I would highly recommend them.
